Faded Red was founded in 1982 by Mike Raffe, Tim Smalley, Paul Detwiler, Iain Heggie, Clark Blynne and Frank Lichtner. They shared a vision for supporting Cornell Rugby through improved alumni relations.
Initially named the Cornell University Alumni Football Club, Faded Red has since grown from an ‘old boys’ rugby team into a full-fledged organizing and fundraising operation for Cornell Rugby. Today, Faded Red also serves as the primary liaison to Ivy Rugby and team suppliers like Boathouse Sports.
In the early 1990s, Faded Red formed its first board of directors, consisting of Vincente Stasolla, Pat Kandiannis, Bobbie Weggler, Mike Raffe, Frank Lichtner, Nick Strenk, and Fleming Heilman. With a board in place, Faded Red moved to host its first alumni event in 1993 and began driving a multi-year, multi-generation fundraising campaign to secure a dedicated field for Cornell Rugby on the Cornell University campus. This field, which remains in place today, was opened in 2005.
More recently, stewardship of Faded Red has transitioned to alumni graduates from the early and mid-2000s, many of whom serve as current Faded Red board and executive committee members. In addition, in 2011, Faded Red welcomed its first women’s rugby club alumna to the board, formalizing Faded Red as the alumni organization for all of Cornell Rugby.
About Faded Red
The Cornell University Rugby Alumni Association (Faded Red) is dedicated to supporting men’s and women’s rugby at Cornell University through alumni engagement and giving. Today, Cornell University is home to three rugby clubs, the undergraduate men’s rugby team (CURFC), the undergraduate women’s rugby team (CWRFC) and the graduate student men’s rugby team (Johnson School Rugby Club), all of which enjoy financial support from Faded Red. Current and former members of these teams, current and former coaches, and player families are welcome to join Faded Red.
